Good morning Wee Stinky

Kyle Martin collecting data
Kyle Martin, PhD Candidate, Plant Biology Section, School of Integrative Plant Science, collects volatile samples at 6 a.m this morning.

Working in shifts, students have been gathering data at 2-hour intervals around the clock as flowering approaches.

To find out more about some of the research they’re conducting, see the video Measuring What Makes Titan Arums Stink.

Overnight data collection continues

With the impending bloom of Wee Stinky, graduate and undergraduate students and postdocs continue to put in yeoman’s effort collecting data overnight. You can watch them do their work via the webcam. Most of the action takes place on even hours Eastern Standard Time.

The data collectors you will see in the wee hours are:

Undergraduates (all seniors):

  • Trisha Basu
  • Karen Chang
  • Brian Worthington
  • Maggie Henderson

Graduate students:

  • Kyle Martin
  • Geoff Broadhead
  • Callum Kingwell
  • Monica Carvalho

Postdoc:

  • Katalin Boroczky

Measuring What Makes Titan Arums Stink

How do you measure volatile gasses and carbon dioxide emitted by Wee Stinky and take its temperature?

Robert Raguso, professor and chair in the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior and Kyle Martin, PhD Candidate, Plant Biology Section, School of Integrative Plant Science explain their techniques.
